Addition to 20 with Regrouping (Autumn theme)

Hi again!
To teach addition with regrouping, first we must be sure that kids know very well number bonds to 10. That's why we begin with activities to practice making 10.

After that it is important to understand the expanded form of numbers 11-20 when the one addend is 10. For example 10+3=13
So with grouping the snails so that the number, the blocks and the expanded form match help the children to understand the expanded form and connect them.

After we are sure that they know very well all above we go on to regrouping strategies.
First strategy is to make 10 and then add the rest.

Another strategy is to "catch the thief"! The thief is the greatest addend. He steals because he wants to be 10. Catch the thief! Make 10 to help you add.
1 less strategy:
Think like me!
9+6=?
Since I know that 10+6=16
Then 9+6 is one less

9+6=15

Using "Big Ideas cards" students can practice with the above strategy.

Double facts is another strategy that help students to find easily addition with regrouping.
